There's no place like New Orleans.

I have been a resident of New Orleans for my entire life. I was born in the lower 9th ward then my family moved to the east later in my childhood. Both of those areas were completely destroyed by Hurricane Katrina. Every member of my family from my parents to grandparents to sibling lost everything they owned. Now at this critical point in New Orleans history we are trying to pick up the pieces and rebuild. I appreciate this organization and this message that there is no place like home, this is the same message I convey to my family when I speak to them as they all are still displaced to Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Birmingham and in some cases even further. There is no place like home & The people must sustain the people.

FEMA gives away $85 million of supplies for Katrina victims (June 11, 2008)
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (CNN) -- FEMA gave away about $85 million in household goods meant for Hurricane Katrina victims, a CNN investigation has found. The material, from basic kitchen goods to sleeping necessities, sat in warehouses for two years before the Federal Emergency Management Agency's giveaway to federal and state agencies this year.

James McIntyre, FEMA's acting press secretary, said that FEMA was spending more than $1 million a year to store the material and that another agency wanted the warehouses torn down, so "we needed to vacate them." He declined a request for an on-camera interview, telling CNN the giveaway was "not news." Photos from one of the facilities in Fort Worth, Texas, show pallet after pallet of cots, cleansers, first-aid kits, coffee makers, camp stoves and other items stacked to the ceiling.

Storm's Escape Routes: One Forced, One Chosen ()
The small van, painted a heraldic bright green, is planted like a flag amid the frenetic commerce of Midtown, claiming a speck of territory for Louisiana. Customers line up at the window to order New Orleans-style snowballs: fluffy concoctions of ice, flavor and condensed milk so delicate they immediately begin to puddle in the heat.

To Kenneth Woodfin, an entrepreneurial 26-year-old who fled New Orleans a year ago as Hurricane Katrina approached, the van is not only his first business venture, but also an emblem of his family’s new, more prosperous life in Atlanta.
